By artist Modu:This is a classic Yuanbao-shaped gaiwan, named for its rounded, ingot-like form that symbolizes prosperity and good fortune in Chinese culture. I shape every piece by hand, refining the curve of the bowl, the tight fit of the lid, and the stability of the saucer until it sits perfectly in the hand, pouring smoothly without dripping. The clay is premium high-white kaolin, refined for days to create a luminous, translucent body that glows softly when held to light—this is the clean, elegant texture that defines Jingdezhen’s finest porcelain. This gaiwan uses the underglaze blue and red technique, one of the rarest and most difficult crafts in Jingdezhen porcelain. Unlike standard underglaze blue, this technique uses two mineral pigments: cobalt for the blue mountains, pines, and figures, and copper red for the vibrant red blossoms. The two pigments have extremely different firing temperature requirements—even a 5-degree difference in the kiln can ruin the red pigment, turning it black or burning it away entirely. For centuries, even imperial kilns struggled to produce perfect underglaze red pieces, making this craft a true test of an artisan’s skill. Every line of the misty mountains, every needle of pine, every dot of red on the blossoms, every detail of the scholar walking by the stream, is painted freehand with a fine brush, no stencils, no shortcuts. Fired at over 1300℃, the pigments fuse permanently with the clear glaze, so the colors will never fade
