By artist Modu:In Jingdezhen culture, bamboo symbolizes integrity, resilience, and modesty—qualities that echo the quiet strength of the artisan’s craft. This pitcher uses the linglong carving technique, one of the rarest and most difficult in Jingdezhen porcelain. I first carve tiny, precise holes into the wet clay by hand, then fill them with transparent glaze to create a “see-through” effect that lets light shine through like a lantern. Next, I paint the bamboo motif in underglaze blue over the carved areas—every leaf, every stem, every line is painted freehand with a fine brush. Fired at over 1300℃, the glaze and blue pigment fuse permanently with the clay, so the design will never fade, chip, or leak.
