Frosty elegance, enduring fragrance. The composition features a deep, rich cobalt blue ground, intricately textured with “cracked ice” lines, while pure white plum blossoms are left in reserve to represent their solitary bloom in the cold. This striking “blue-on-white” contrast creates a profound visual rhythm.

By artist Modu:”Painted as ice, fired with the heart.” The “Bing-Mei” (Cracked Ice and Plum) pattern has flourished in Jingdezhen for centuries. It celebrates “vitality amidst brokenness”—the ice is cracking, yet the plum blossoms thrive upon it. This represents the unyielding spirit that our ancestors held in the highest regard.
The greatest challenge in crafting this Gaiwan lies in “Fen-shui” (Water-grading). That vast expanse of deep blue is not a simple flat wash. We artisans must use a specialized brush, relying on the strength and precision of our wrists to control the pigment’s concentration. We “grade” the cobalt stroke by stroke to achieve a depth resembling a sapphire, all while accurately preserving the pristine white of the blossoms. It is a manual mastery that takes decades to stabilize.
From the aging of the clay to the final firing, every step must respect the natural laws of the kiln. Every hand-painted ice pattern is unique—that is the soul of craftsmanship. When you drink from this Gaiwan, you feel a clarity and nobility that transcends time. It is not just a vessel; it is a tradition we artisans protect, one brushstroke at a time.
